At Wrestlemania everything is taken to another level! And there is no match that fans are more emotionally-invested in than the Undertaker match. I talk about this a lot, being emotionally-invested. It’s no secret that The Undertaker is not the best wrestler in the world. His moveset isn’t that great. So why are his matches consistently the best matches of the night?
Because his story makes the fans care. That he has never lost a match at Wrestlemania, that this is his legacy…it matters a lot! And for some reason his storylines and the promos leading up to the match are usually some of the best the PPV. Always. If they took as much time to care with everyone else’s story as they do Taker’s they’d be doing better.
We all want Undertaker’s streak to continue…and that emotional investment is what makes the matches so great. For me, it shows that wrestling ability, charisma, promos, etc are nothing compared to telling a good story…that is the most important thing. You have to make people care. At the end of the day, if you’re not telling good stories, you’re losing out on some great opportunities.
There’s also something about the way the matches are conducted. The back and forth…the finishing move…a pin…opponent’s finishing move…a pin…another pin…another almost pin! Back and forth! I’ve noticed that regardless of who’s fighting–that kind of dynamic in a match gets the crowd involved. The “Oh so close!” factor. Your stomach churns as the ref counts down. “No…they’re not really gonna end the streak. No way…” Just as the ref is coming down for the 3-count. OH! HE’S UP! YES! And everyone cheers. Louder and louder the longer it goes on. In some matches this might be boring…but not the Undertaker match. Never.
The Undertaker winning at Wrestlemania is part of the tradition of the event. My favorite Undertaker Wrestlemania match was his 45-minute bout with Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 25. It’s pegged as one of the greatest Wrestlemania matches of all time. Chris Jericho names it as is favorite.
Being there that night…it was amazing. I thought I would be bored by the match…but there’s something about being there that makes it so much better. You care that much more. “I finally made it to Wrestlemania and this can not be the year Taker loses his match!” I thought. Not my year! And the entrances! Talk about another level! The Shawn Michael’s entrance where he’s just posing like Jesus or some shit is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.
Everything good that is Wrestlemania…no matter what happens the rest of the time…compounds into this one match and in that moment it becomes the only thing that matters. And that’s just a beautiful thing.
